Respect for other religions from a Christian perspective |
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 23:11 |

First let me state the issue. The impact of Fiji Christianity on the non-Christians in Fiji has been minimal despite the presence of Hindu and Muslim Indo-Fijians over a period of over 130 years. The picture is the same world wide. Christians often close their minds to people of other faiths yet live alongside them in their daily life. As Hans Ucko says, “Entering the church I leave my neighbor of another faith behind. I enter another world. When leaving the church, I join the other world again and see my neighbor standing outside. We do not really meet because our worlds do not.” (Hans Ucko Common Roots New Horizons, P.43). |

Draft media decree in Fiji |
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 23:05 |
Reception of the draft decree has been mixed. In Fiji, some say the decree is needed to promote a more responsible media. Some are reported to generally accept the decree but are concerned about how its powers may be used when politicians return to the scene in 2014. Others are concerned about how the military-led government will use these powers now. And others consider the decree, however used, is "draconian, oppressive [and] gives the State absolute powers of control.” |

Role of media in freedom of religion |

It has often been argued that societies have always been changed by the nature of the media by which people communicate rather than by the content of communication. The Media revolution especially the visual and the electronic media which hit the Pacific Islands in the last decade has in my view brought the biggest single element of change to our islands over the last twenty years.
All of a sudden the Pacific Islands have been put on the fast forward mode of modern technology and life will never be the same again in our islands. We are now part of the global village where privacy and private guilt have long since vanished and where catastrophes around the world are brought into our living rooms everyday. Pacific societies have often claimed that its idea of society and its way of functioning is a fruit of its religious beliefs and traditions. Many of the achievements and challenges we face in the region today could be seen as products of this vision. |
