“Generation Next" training for young women producers and broadcasters Print E-mail

  Suva, Fiji: 20 young women took part in FemLINKPACIFIC’s annual Generation Next training for young women producers and broadcasters which this year focused on digital storytelling as well as radio basics such as scriptwriting, on air presentation and production. 

The training held last month at the organization’s community media centre in Suva, was supported by WACC and the International Women’s Development Agency.

WACC corporate member to mark 10th anniversary Print E-mail

 FemLINKPACIFIC, a women’s media NGO and a WACC corporate member based in Suva, Fiji, will launch a 3 week programme from September 14 to October 3 to mark its first decade as a Pacific based women’s media network.

The network has developed and implemented a range of women's media initiatives since its establishment in September 2000. It has coordinated the women’s community media network in the region since 2006 following the establishment of its mobile women’s community radio station in May 2004.

WACC supported Telecentre connects rural communities Print E-mail

  A Telecenter supported by WACC is enabling communities in remote villages of Wailoku and Waisasavu, in the highlands of Naitasiri, Fiji, to access information that responds to their needs. The communities can now access computers, Internet, and other ICTs that help them gather information and discuss pertinent issues such as land boundaries and unemployment.

Restore media freedom in Fiji Print E-mail

  In the face of the worsening situation in Fiji, where media are being censored and journalists deported, WACC expresses solidarity with the island nation’s people and especially with WACC members.

Fiji’s military government declared a 30-day state of emergency on 10 April under which local news reports critical of the government were banned and international media coverage subjected to censorship.

  It was not such a blessed Easter for the people of Fiji. The country has become increasingly unstable in the past few days after its Court of Appeal ruled last Thursday that Commodore Bainimarama's regime was illegal under the country's 1997 constitution. In response, the country's ailing President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, sacked the judiciary, dissolved the constitution, ruled out any election for five years and briefly removed Commodore Bainimarama before re-appointing him as prime minister.

(3 April 2009) This week, women’s NGOs have been keeping our fingers crossed in anticipation that as UN member states prepare to finally commit to Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) we will soon see the UN system more accountable to gender equality commitments and also more responsive to country-level needs and effectively resourced, through an appropriate combination of assessed and voluntary funding – and with our own Under Secretary General.
